In this onset picture, Jon is clearly identifiable as the director due to the over-sized viewfinder and exaggerated "finding the shot" expression.

Director's Statement

5 years ago, I asked a rather delicate question of 3 female friends of mine over late-night coffee:

“What would you do if a totally non-threatening friend offered you a hundred thousand dollars for a one night stand?”

Half-expecting a face full of hot java, I was floored by the responses:

“Sure.”

“Why not.”

“I’d definitely think about it.

The lack of moral outrage surprised me and got me thinking about what love, sex, and intimacy mean to young people today.  We live in a world where almost every commercial, movie, television show, and song urges—no, demands—that we find these things immediately, and at all costs.  Free Love is my attempt to examine that phenomenon, and to ask my audience: how do you feel about it?

Writing and filming such a story—especially one that attempts to use humor to examine these subjects— proved a challenge.  How can we have characters even think about engaging in such a taboo act without immediately disliking them?  How can we broach these intensely personal topics in just a few minutes?  And how the hell can we make this funny?

Fortunately, I was aided in my task by some incomparable collaborators.  A brilliant cast that breathed life into their characters and a gifted crew that created a rich and real world.  Together, they helped make Free Love exactly the sort of question-raising film that I hoped it would be.  I am tremendously proud of the work we have created together and look forward to sharing it with you
